The Transcultural Caravan on the move – account of a journey
by Michelle Sun.
From 9th to 17th of April, the Transcultural Caravan was part of an innovative concept of Zeppelin University: During the so called “ZU Bildungsexkursion”, several students, staff and collaborators travelled through Germany, accompanied by an eye-catching Airstream and lots of information about the university.
Tackling questions about “Universities in the 21th Century”, the roadshow stopped in eight different German cities: Stuttgart, Frankfurt am Main, Düsseldorf, Hannover, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig and Nürnberg, before coming back to its home port Friedrichshafen. Discussing how universities should be organized and what they stand for in a more and more complex world also includes visions on how to overcome borders in a globalized world. And this, of course, is exactly what the Transcultural Caravan stands for. Therefore, we were really happy to join this road-trip adventure and excited to become a “real” moving caravan for the duration of the trip. We saw our mission in spreading visions of transculturality, but also in representing the Transcultural Caravan as an example of how the concept of “Global Studies” is realized at Zeppelin University.
Our project manager Julika joined the team in Stuttgart and Frankfurt, project collaborator Michelle was present in Berlin, Leipzig and Nürnberg. During these days, we had the chance to inform interested pedestrians about the ideas, goals and concepts of the Transcultural Caravan. We were also very happy to meet some alumni of Zeppelin University as well as some members of our network at several stations.
During this entire trip, we had the opportunity to lead great discussions about transcultural leadership and globalization and were able to exchange lots of ideas and opinions. Therefore, we came back home not only with a lot of information and flyers given away, but also with many interesting contacts, networking opportunities and a suitcase full of great ideas and suggestions for the future of the Transcultural Caravan!
In our Uganda fieldtrip we will visit the Hope Development Initiative in Kampala, in their rural communities and various of its stakeholders. We will conduct many interesting interviews to advance the individual research projects of the group members that will together answer our overarching question about transculturality and the Hope Development Initiative.
As a Pre-Event to this year’s Transcultural Leadership Summit, the Transcultural Research Groups who emerged out of the previous Summits will present their interdisciplinary as well as trans- cultural research methods and the findings they acquired from their field trips to Hong Kong and Uganda.
